Organic Cotton

Organic Cotton

Organic cotton is cotton that is produced and certified to organic agricultural standards, using methods and materials that have low impact on the environment. Organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Organic cotton uses far less water to grow too. The main benefit of organic materials, however, is that the crops aren’t treated with pesticides, insecticides, herbicides and Genetically Modified Organisms. These toxins are harmful for farmers and workers, us as consumers, and entire wildlife eco-systems.

Always look out for the GOTS certification when purchasing organic textiles. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is an internationally recognized organic textile standard. GOTS ensures the organic status of textiles from the harvesting of the raw materials through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing all the way to labelling, in order to provide credible assurances to the consumer. From the consumer viewpoint, organic cotton is extremely soft and helps keep the skin free of chemicals and pesticides as well as reduce irritation and allergies. That’s why organic cotton fabrics are better to wear, especially for babies.

Why use organic cotton for our children:  Ordinary cotton is processed using dyes, bleach and a host of other unhealthy chemicals that have been attributed to allergies, eczema and even cancer. Organic cotton, on the other hand, is free from all artificial additives as well as free from formaldehyde which has been classified as a cancer-causing agent by the International Institute for Research on Cancer. Children and especially babies have incredibly sensitive skin that is more porous and absorbent than adult skin. People with allergies and sensitivity to chemicals especially benefit and we can certainly also celebrate the fact that certified organic cotton doesn’t leave any harmful side effects on the environment. Organic cotton also has the ability to be worn by people with chemical sensitivities, who are unable to wear conventional cotton because they have allergic reactions to the dyes and chemical traces it contains. This is especially important for babies and children because they have more sensitive skin and are more sensitive to chemicals.
